Founder of KATN-AM and KBBK-FM
(Ralph owned the stations from 1961-1972)
And receive a guided tour of the building,
which is available for rent or lease!
Come hear air-checks from 1963 and 1964 featuring Paul Ryder, Tip Goss, and excerpts from a 1968 Bob Salter “Coffee Time” Call-In Talk Show featuring 30-year-old Byron Johnson who went on to become a distinguished Justice on the Idaho Supreme Court! Hear old K-10 commercials plus two classic “K-Bar-10” Jingles!
KATN-AM was Idaho’s FIRST full time Country Music Station signing on the air in April of 1961 at 1010 Kc. with 1,000 watts Daytime Only. The air talent that was developed at K-10 was amazing and included names like Ken Bort, Marty Martin, Paul Ryder, Tip Goss, Bob Salter, Gerry Dean Moser, Sammy Fisher, Larry Chase, Jeff Grimes, and more!
The control room was a glass “airport control tower” and was located on top of the building! It was removed in the 1980’s but the front sidewalk still has one of the old frontier-style wagon wheels cemented into the front curb! Much of the original building layout is still intact!
In August of 1968, KATN increased power to 5.000 watts and moved to KBOI’s
former 950 spot on the dial (again daytime only). When they signed-on, KBBK-FM was only 29,000 watts at 92.3 broadcasting in full Stereo! KBBK was one of Idaho’s first stations to go stereo, and was Boise’s only stereo FM at the time! During the daytime, KBBK played country, simulcasting with KATN-AM. At night KBBK branched off and played MOR and some rock!
Early KKBK D.J.s included Fred Novak, Jeff Grimes, Kasey Keating, Shirl Black, and Spencer Burke.
Ralph Fraser also started Valley FM Background Music, which was the area’s first Background Music Service! KBBK-FM was the first FM rock station to broadcast from Deer Point in April of 1974, using the automated TM “Rock” format.
